Chapter planning session
John W. Hargis.
John W. Hargis first applied to the University of Texas at Austin in 1954. He was turned away, sent to take prerequisites at Prairie View A&M, and admitted in 1955 on his second attempt.
In January 1959 he became the first Black student to earn an engineering degree from UT, a B.S. in chemical engineering. Black engineers have been in Cockrell ever since.
Texas NSBE runs GBMs, mentorship, career expo, and chapter life on the Forty Acres for the students who came after him.

The chapter starts
Black engineering students organize the chapter that becomes Texas NSBE, one of the earliest groups on the Forty Acres built for Black engineers specifically.
NSBE goes national
Six students at Purdue, the Chicago Six, found the National Society of Black Engineers and hold its first national conference. Texas NSBE has been part of that network since.
Fifty years in
The chapter marks half a century of Black engineers at UT Austin, and of the alumni who came through it.
